Thursday, August 5, 2004 (Kolkata):
Tamil Nadu wicket
keeper Dinesh Karthik has finally got the nod of the selectors ahead
of the much fancied Parthiv Patel in the Indian Squad for the
Tri-Nation Videocon Trophy in Holland, Natwest Series and the Champions Trophy
in England.
Another significant name that was missing from the squad was that of Zaheer Khan. Zaheer Khan is still not fully fit according to the
Indian team physio's report and the selectors have done a right
thing in excluding the Baroda Fast bowler. In place of Zaheer, the
selectors have opted for experienced Ajit Agarkar, who's now playing
County cricket for Middlesex.
Rohan Gavaskar was also named in the
15-man squad, but he would eventually miss out in the ICC Champions
Trophy, which has a stipulation of a 14-man squad. The 19 year
old, Dinesh Karthik caught the eye of everyone with his sparkling
performance in the U19 World Cup and also his brilliant centuries in
the Semi Final and the Finals of Ranji Trophy for Tamil Nadu.
Indian Squad: Sourav Ganguly
(captain), Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS
Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif, Irfan Pathan, Rohan Gavaskar,
Ashish Nehra, Lakshmipathy Balaji, Dinesh Karthik, Ajit Agarkar,
Harbhajan Singh & Anil Kumble. |
