Viru fined 20%, Prince Lara untouched |
June 08, 2006
India’s
Virender Sehwag
was fined 20% of his match fees for violating
the ICC Code of conduct during the final day’s
play of the exciting
Antigua Test.
Sehwag who had a decent outing as an off spinner
dismissed West Indian all rounder
Dwayne Bravo with
a beautiful top spinner and he started to
celebrate immediately after he thought Bravo had
nicked it behind. There was no looking back for
Sehwag that is no looking back at the umpire to
appeal for that. The Umpire Asad Rauf, did raise
his finger though with a smile on his face. And
the smile may have been for Sehwag violating
Section 1.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for
Players that is “the practice of celebrating a
dismissal before the Umpire’s decision has been
given”.
On the other Brian Lara
was untouched and that raised serious doubts
over the double standards employed by the match
referee Jeff Crowe. Lara was seen clearly on the
screen as snatching the ball from Asad Rauf’s
hand during the hold in play for judging
Mahendra Singh
Dhoni’s dismissal. Lara’s body language
showed disrespect to the Umpires and he was
forcibly influencing Dhoni to walk off the
field. But the West Indian Captain might have
got away with any fine as the entire situation
was a result of the 3rd Umpire and the two
ground umpires’ inability in coming to a
decision and also the rareness of that event.
