Indians win the
Potchefstroom warm-up match |
December 09, 2006
Battered
and bruised by a 0-4 margin in the ODI Series,
Team India has found some confidence in the
four-day game at the Sedgar's Park which
finished inside three days. The Indians beat
Rest of South Africa by 96 runs with the bowlers
coming to the party once again. Rest of South
Africa got 224 in their chase of 321.
The Indians who had started the day at 93 for 7
but they could add up another 49 runs which
proved quite critical in the end. Irfan Pathan
remained undefeated for the second time in this
match, he got his score to 40 not out to
increase his chances of playing in the first
Test Match. The South Africans took over 13
overs to take the remaining three wickets this
morning. Alfonso Thomas, the opening bowler
finished with 7/54.
Zaheer Khan, India's best bowler on this tour
provided the perfect start when Rest of South
African came into chase 321. Zaheer took the
first two wickets to go down which also included
that of Jacques Rudolph, the Skipper who was
cleaned up in the first ball of the innings! A
hundred-run partnership between the young Vaughn
van Jaarsveld (66 from 70 balls with 10 fours
and a six) and the hard hitting Justin Kemp (53
from 62 balls with 9 fours) did worry the
Indians a bit as the target was challenged.
Anything could have happened if a player like
Justin Kemp stays there in the middle.
Fortunately the Indians could break the
partnership and once these two batsmen got
dismissed, India's task of completing the
victory was at ease. The South Africans were
bowled out in 48.5 overs with Zaheer taking 3
for 36 in 12 while Harbhajan also picked up
three for 39 in 12 overs. VRV Singh had a good
match too picking up five wickets in the game.
