Rains rob away
the Jo’burg ODI |
An exciting One Day Series between South Africa
and India took a beating with heavy rains ruling
out the first One Dayer at Johannesburg without
a single ball being bowled. There wasn’t time
for even the coin to go up as the players and
everyone had to wait for more than four hours to
know about the match abandonment at the
Wanderers.
This five-ODI Series is now a four-match one,
something which had happened when the two teams
had met in India last season. The last series
between the sides was shared 2-2 with rain
running the Chennai game. The second game of
this series is on the 22nd at Kingsmead in
Durban. The Durban track has been traditionally
known for being one of the fastest in the world,
so the Indians will have a tough opener. They
had lost their warm-up game against Rest of
South Africa at Benoni by 37 runs.
It was a day when the rain never really gave up
and when it did stop, the ground staff did every
bit to get it to dry. There was one final effort
to squeeze in a 20-overs match but that wasn’t
possible as the rain revisited the stadium in no
time. The only cricketing action that was
possible in the Wanderers was in the basement
with Dravid and a few others utilizing their
time for some batting practice in the indoor
nets.
