Sri Lankans make Indian batsmen stutter

Wasim Jaffer helped himself with a neat half centuryThe Indians' ploy of making the three-day match against Sri Lanka A almost backfired during the last day's play. Set to chase a manageable 294, India were reduced to 126 for 5 giving some chances of a Sri Lankan victory. Eventually Indians managed to bat out 55 overs at the loss of six wickets.

Earlier in the day, the Lankans declared their second innings at 265 for 7 with left handed opener Michael Vandort registering a century. Vandort got 117 from just 186 balls with 18 fours. In their chase of 294, India did have a couple of highs with one of them being a half century from opener Wasim Jaffer.

It was a double failure for Dinesh Karthik at the top order, once again failing to stay at the crease for a significant amount of time. But his confidence may not have gone low because of his half century in the second test. Yuvraj Singh got promoted up in the batting order but he could just score a brisk 33 from 40 with 7 fours. Likewise MS Dhoni as well failed, once again to a single digit score. Dhoni had a 9-ball stay at the wicket in which he just got off the mark. Wasim Jaffer did well though collecting 55 runs from 84 balls with 6 fours and a six.

Gautam Gambhir saved the match for Indians with an unbeaten half century after batting out 102 balls. He made 53 with 8 fours after having come at an unusual position of no.5. VVS Laxman with 3 and Rahul Dravid with 15 failed to get going. The Indians got to 187 for 6 in 55 overs. Much of the damage was done by medium pacer Dammika Prasad (12-0-34-2) and left arm spinner Rangana Herath (13-4-44-2).
