Bose, Powar shine against SL A

It was a Bose and Powar show during the first day's play at Grace Road in Leicester in a match between two touring teams. Sri Lanka's second string side was bundled out for 266 with Ranadeb Bose picking up a five-wicket haul and Ramesh Powar taking four wickets. Indians ended at 25 for the loss of opener Dinesh Karthik at stumps on the opening day's play.

For the 28-year-old Ranadeb Bose, it was his best performance on this tour having failed to impress anyone during the match against England Lions prior to the first test. Bose went onto take his 200th first class wicket when he had Kaushal Lokuarachchi leg before the wicket. Sri Lanka A had a solid partnership of 73 for the second wicket between opener Michael Vandort (52 from 98 with 8 fours and a six) and Dilruwan Perera (34). But the Lankans lost their way after that partnership losing wickets at regular intervals to Bose and Powar. Ishant Sharma who had shared the new ball with Bose chipped in with a wicket in between.

The Sri Lankans had opted to bat first on a good batting track under sunny conditions. Their Skipper Thilan Samaraweera was the highest scorer of the day with a 100-ball 75 that had 9 fours. Ranadeb Bose finished with superb figures of 5 for 51 in 18.2 overs and Ramesh Powar had 4 for 85 in 24 overs. The wicket keeper of the day was Dinesh Karthik who also had a struggling time behind the stumps just like MS Dhoni. Anil Kumble went wicketless in his 11 overs. MS Dhoni was allowed to bowl three overs of his fancy medium pace too.

The Indians lost Dinesh Karthik for a personal score of 11 in their first innings. Wasim Jaffer and Gautam Gambhir were the two not out batsmen as India got to 25 for 1 in 11 overs. The Indians had rested Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Sreesanth, Zaheer Khan and RP Singh for this three-day match.

Brief Scores : Sri Lanka A first innings 266 all out in 76.2 Overs (Samaraweera 75 Vandort 52 Lokuarachchi 35 Perera 34 Dammika Prasad 23, Ranadeb Bose 5/51 Ramesh Powar 4/85 Ishant Sharma 1/57) Vs Indians first innings 25 for 1 in 11 Overs (Karthik 11 Jaffer 7*, Dammika Prasad 1/3)
