India in Bangladesh 2004-05: 2nd Test at
Chittagong |
Day 4 - December 20th, 2004
India 540 (R Dravid 160 G Gambhir 139
S Ganguly 88, M Rafique 4/156) bt BD 333
(Ashraful 158*, Kumble 4/55) &
124
(Pathan 5/32) by an innings and 83 runs Full Scorecard
All the formalities such as the Indians taking
the last Bangladeshi wicket, the presentations
ceremony for both the Man of the Match and the
Man of the Series and of course the Videocon
Trophy were all over in a very short time.
Wonder all these could have done yesterday with
an additional 15 minutes, but rules are rules
and light rule has to be the same even if you
are a Sachin Tendulkar or a Talha Jubair.
However it needed only 4 balls on Day 4 for the
last resistance of Bangladesh to fall. Talha
Jubair and Bangladesh's innings came to an end
after he was caught by Irfan Pathan off the
bowling of Harbhajan. The innings folded at 124
giving India a comfortable win of an innings and
83 runs. Man of the Match went to Md.Ashraful
and the Man of the Series had to go to Irfan
Pathan.
Day 3 - December 19th, 2004
India 540 (R Dravid 160 G Gambhir 139
S Ganguly 88, M Rafique 4/156) lead
BD 333
(Ashraful 158*, Kumble 4/55) &
118/9
(Pathan 5/32)
India are just one wicket short of a 2-0 clean
sweep against Bangladesh in the 2nd Test at
Chittagong.
Resuming at 54/3, Bangladesh had a good start to
Day 3 with the experience of Bashar and Ashraful
batting well. They added 80 crucial runs for the
4th wicket before Bashar was stumped by Dinesh
Karthik of the bowling of Kumble. Aftab Ahmed's
introduction to the crease put the Indian
bowlers on the backfoot as he along with
Ashraful sent the bowlers packing to all parts
of the park. Ashraful meanwhile on the other end
notched up his 3rd Test hundred of just 125
balls which comprised of 15 fours and 2 sixes.
Kumble finally brought the end a fine
partnership of 115 runs by trapping Aftab Ahmed
plumb in front for a well made 43. Manjural
Islam went back without disturbing the scorers
for a duck, plumb in front to Zaheer. Mashud
supported Ashraful well with a well made 22, but
Khan managed to induce an edge of his bat into
Karthik's hand with Bangladesh on 300/7. The
post Tea Session saw a flurry of wickets, as
Bangladesh were bowled out for 333, 7 runs short
of the follow-on target with Ashraful still
unbeaten on a brilliant 158.
The Indians enforced the follow-on on Bangladesh
and it paid dividends as Pathan managed to send
back Nafis Iqbal on the 1st ball of the 2nd
Innings. Javed Omar was the next to go for 6
after he edged Pathan into the hands of Karthik.
Aftab Ahmed went off the mark with a boundary,
but his short lived innings ended the very next
ball as he was given out leg before wicket of
the bowling of Pathan. Bashar and Rafique put on
41 runs for the 4th wicket before which Pathan
struck again to dismiss Rafique and Bashar in
quick succession giving him his 3rd 5-wicket
haul for the series. The remaining batsmen
followed a procession back to the pavilion, as
Kumble took 2 while Harbhajan and Sachin took 1
wicket each. No.10 Nazmul Hossain and No.11
Talha Jubair put on 34 unbeaten runs for the
last wicket, with a major chunk of runs coming
from Jubair's bat. Bad Light stopped play
eventually with the Banglas still behind the
Indians by 89 runs. Hossain was unbeaten on 8,
while Jubair was on 25 at Stumps.
Day 2 - December 18th, 2004
India 540 (R Dravid 160 G Gambhir 139
S Ganguly 88, M Rafique 4/156) lead
Bangladesh 54/3 (N Iqbal 31, A Kumble
2/14) by 496 runs
India are on top of Bangladesh with a lead of
496 runs at the end of Day 2 in the 2nd Test at
Chittagong.
The Banglas had a dream start to the day with
Tendulkar being sent back to the pavilion on the
1st ball of the day leg before wicket to
Mashrafe bin Mortaza. He went on to take his 3rd
wicket in the form of overnight batsman Rahul
Dravid caught behind by Mashud. VVS Laxman was
unlucky to get out for just 9 runs after he
scooped back a catch to Rafique and replays
suggested the ball touching the ground. Dinesh
Karthik and Pathan followed their way back to
the pavilion soon, both getting out to Rafique.
Harbhajan Singh played a blitzkrieg knock of 47
of just 43 balls which included 7 hits to the
fence and 2 over the fence. The Indian Captain
on the other end made his way to a fine 88
before he was finally dismissed caught
brilliantly by Jubair at long on. The Indian
Innings soon ended at the score of 540 with
Harbhajan being caught brilliantly by Manjural
Islam of the bowling of Hossain.
The Bangladeshis got off to a quiet start with
the openers Nafis Iqbal and Javed Omar putting
on 48 runs for the 1st wicket. The introduction
of spin-twins in the form of Kumble and
Harbhajan saw Bangladesh losing wickets in quick
succession as Omar edged Kumble to Dravid at
slip. Iqbal and night-watchman Mortaza soon
followed him getting out to Harbhajan and Kumble
respectively. The Bangladeshis were tottering at
a hapless 54/3 with Bashar stranded without
opening his account at Stumps.
Day 1 - December 17th, 2004
India 334/2 (R Dravid 145* G
Gambhir 139)
After a convincing victory over the Banglas
in the 1st Test at Dhaka, the Indians were
looking forward to make it a 2-0 whitewash at
Chittagong. The Indian Captain Sourav Ganguly
won the toss on a flat track at Chittagong and
elected to bat first. The Indians went in
without any changes from Dhaka, where as
Bangladesh had Aftab Ahmed, Nazmul Hossain and
Talha Jubair coming in for Rajin Saleh, Tapash
Baisya and Mushfiqur Rehman.
The Indians didn't get off to a good start as
they lost Sehwag early, caught by Bashar at slip
of the bowling of Mortaza with the score at
14/1. The Indian vice-captain Rahul Dravid who
was dismissed for a duck at Dhaka joined Gautam
Gambhir and was looking to make amends for his
dismal performance at Dhaka. Gambhir played some
aggressive shots as he slammed Nazmul Hossain
for 4 boundaries in an over and within no time
reached his 50 of just 60 balls. Dravid soon
brought up his 50 of 95 balls which included 8
hits to the fence. The stylish left-hander from
Delhi continued his domination over the
Bangladeshis as he notched up his maiden Test
century of 131 balls with 16 beautiful strokes
to the fence. Immediately after tea, Dravid got
to his century which consisted of 14 boundaries.
The duo put on 259 runs for the 2nd wicket
before which Gambhir had his stumps cleaned up
as he tried to pull the ball of Nazmul Hossain
but only managed an under edge onto the stumps.
He was dismissed for a brilliant 139 with 19
boundaries. The double centurion from the 1st
Test at Dhaka - Sachin Tendulkar continued from
where he had left as he slammed the hapless
Bangladeshi bowlers to six boundaries all over
the park. The duo of Sachin and Dravid within no
time put 61 runs for the 3rd wicket and were
unbeaten at Stumps with India at a commanding
334/2. Rahul Dravid was unbeaten on 145 while
Sachin was on 36.
