First Class Cricket : Stage of Dormancy

First Class cricket has been on the downslide ever since heroes like Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar et al gave up the game. Nowadays, the Tendulkars and the Dravids have hardly stopped bothering about what their state sides are upto. I remember a time when a jet-lagged Sunil Gavaskar came from the Windies tour after facing the Fiery Four and then wearing the Mumbai (then Bombay) colours and scoring heavily against Delhi led by Bedi. Now, playing for one’s state has become something the present players have looked upon, citing personal/health reasons, but without realizing that the states have been a major factor for their becoming heroes. Coverage of Ranji Trophy

The Cricket Championship of India began in the 1934-35 season . The trophy was donated by the then Maharaja of Patiala, H.H.Bhupender Singh to the BCCI in fond memory of Sir RanjitSinhji who has the honour of playing test cricket for England and also has the distinction of being the first Indian to be the 'Wisden Cricketer of the year' way back in 1897.The first Ranji Trophy Championship was annexed to Bombay led by L.P.Jai, Bombay defeating North India which was led by G.E.B.Bell . They were teams like 'Nawanagar', 'Holkar' , 'N.India', 'Madras' and others until the 60s . Now teams like Railways, Services, Kerala and many others have sprung out . This is the 69th Edition of the Ranji Trophy and as many as 30 teams involved in it . A new format has been introduced in the 2003/04 season by the BCCI with the top 15 teams divided into 2 groups - Elite A and Elite B , where each team plays the other teams of its group on a league basis. Ranji Trophy 2003/04 Homepage

Coverage of Irani Trophy

Irani Trophy, which is associated with the name of the late Mr.Z.R.Irani, who was the treasurer of the BCCI for more than three decades and then its President for a term (1966 to 1969), is an annual match played between the national champion (winner of the Ranji Trophy) and the Rest of India. The first match in the series was played in March, 1960. In 1961 and 1962 it was not staged. Originally intended to be played at the end of the season, the match was shifted from 1965-66 to the start of the domestic season. Irani Trophy Homepage

Coverage of Duleep Trophy

Duleep Trophy is played on a zonal basis - North Zone, Central Zone, East Zone, West Zone and South Zone battle out for this prestigious tournament. Last season saw England A team taking part in this tournament. The season before this saw a big experiment in the tournament format as BCCI decided to have this tournament for the best available players in the country who were divided into Elite A , Elite B, Plate A and Plate B. This tournament is played in a four-day format. (Last season's Duleep Trophy was won by North Zone).

Coverage of Deodhar Trophy

The first Domestic Championship of the year D.B.Deodhar Trophy gets underway from the 15th of January at different venues . Deodhar Trophy is named after the grand old man of Indian Cricket - the Late Prof . D.B.Deodhar and is a one day format played on league basis among the 5 zonal teams - North, South, East, West and Central Zone.Prof. Dinkar Balwant Deodhar who is known as the 'Grand Old Man' of Indian Cricket was a role model for many first generation Test Cricketers from India . Though the great man didn't get to play a Test Match for India, he has the distinction of scoring the first test hundred for India against the visiting Arthur Gilligan's side although the match doesn't have any official status .The first Deodhar trophy match was between South Zone and East Zone on 21-11-1973 and is incidentally the first recorded one-day match in the country, where South Zone won the match by 6 wickets.
