Greg Chappell is the new Coach for the Indian
team |

The BCCI has ended the process of selecting the
appropriate candidate for being John Wright's
successor as the Indian team coach. And as
expected former Australian skipper, Gregory
Chappell edged out the other three possible
candidates in Mohinder Amarnath, Desmond Haynes
and Tom Moody. Fifty six years old Greg Chappell
played 87 Tests and 76 One Day Internationals
for Australia in a career spanning over 14
years. Greg had scored more than 7000 runs in
Test Matches with 24 hundreds and has over 2000
ODI runs with 3 100s and 14 50s. He also led
Australia in 48 Tests. The BCCI's interviewing
panel comprising former India captains Sunil
Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri and Srinivas
Venkatraghavan and BCCI president Ranbir Singh
Mahendra, secretary Nair and former BCCI
president Jagmohan Dalmiya had interviewed the
four candidates in New Delhi on Thursday. Greg
Chappell had previously been the Coach of South
Australia for five years. According to the BCCI,
Chappell has been given a contract for two years
and would remain in charge of the team till the
2007 World Cup.
