Pool D : England Vs Zimbabwe at Edgbaston

England register an easy victory over Zims

Report by Anusha Chaterjee

Sept. 11th, 2004

Hosts of this edition of Champions Trophy, England began their campaign in grand fashion beating Zimbabwe by a whopping 152 runs at Edgbaston.  The match was spread in two days as yesterday’s play was washed out with England at 195/5 after 38 overs. Paul Colingwood played a sensational innings of 80* to help England add 101 runs in the remaining 12 overs of their innings. Collingwood was well supported by first Geraint Jones who scored 38 and then Ashley Giles who scored 23*. Chasing a difficult target of 300, Zimbabwe got off to a horrendous start with their scorecard reading 66/5. Harmison and Gough picked up a couple of wickets. At this stage, Zimbabwe looked to be bowled under 100 but skipper Tateinda Taibu and Chigumbura put on a 42 runs partnership for the 6th wicket. Once Taibu (40 off 61 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes) was out after getting hit wicket to Ashley Giles, the Zimbabwe innings started to fold and the innings and the match came to a close with Zimbabwe all out for 147 in 39 overs. Chigumbara was unbeaten on a fighting knock of 42 with 6 fours and a six. Steve Harmison was as usual impressive with 3/29 in his 10 overs and Andrew Flintoff picking up 3 wickets for 11 runs in just 6 overs.

Yesterday, Zimbabwe had won the toss and they opted to field first. The Zimbabwean bowlers did a decent job to restrict the England’s batsmen to 123/4, which also included wickets of the dangerous Marcus Treschothick and Andrew Flintoff. Vikram Solanki, who has been in good form anchored the innings with a stroke filled 62 with 10 fours. England were 198/5 in 38 overs and that was when the rain started to pour down and the match was resumed today.
