Kumar Sangakkara continued his rich form with what could be a match winning innings of 152 that has powered Sri Lanka to set up a target of 350 for England. The visitors who might be playing to save the Test Match on the final day are already one down losing Alastair Cook yet again cheaply to Chaminda Vaas. England are at 9 for 1 with Captain Vaughan and night watchman James Anderson as the two unbeaten batsmen.

On the third day. Sri Lanka were given an excellent platform by Jayasuriya and Vandort. Today their good work was carried forward by the experienced pair of Sangakkara and Jayawardene as the two put on 122 runs for the third wicket. Jayawardene made 65 (from 108 balls with 9 fours) before falling to Matthew Hoggard a few minutes before the lunch break. After that Chamara Silva gave the company to Sangakkara in extending SL's second innings lead. Silva contributed a quick 37 with 8 fours to take the score to 387 for 5. England were virtually batted out of the game by the brilliant Sangakkara, who went onto make 152 (from 269 balls with 19 fours). In the first innings, the left hander had come up with 92.

Sri Lanka declared its innings to give a few overs for its bowlers before close at the English batting. The home team declared at 442 for 8 after batting for 130 overs. England have lost Alastair Cook in the five overs that were bowled before the close.
