Third Umpire makes a huge blunder |
November 15, 2005

Umpire Asad Rauf made a huge blunder during the
second session of the 4th day's play by ruling a
clear run out in favour of the batting side.
Inzamam-ul-Haq had driven Ashley Giles to the
mid wicket boundary and the two batsmen Inzamam
and centurion Salman Butt set off for the third
run. Paul Collingwood threw the ball right into
Geraint Jones's gloves and Salman Butt who
almost collided with big Inzy had to make a huge
circle to return to the crease. Butt was
watching the throw coming in from Collingwood
and that fraction of a second looked to be his
downfall. As umpire Billy Bowden referred it to
the third Umpire Asad Rauf, it was clearly
evident that the stumps were disturbed before
Butt slided his bat. But Asad Rauf shockingly
pressed the green button and the decision of not
ruling out Salman Butt came as a complete shock.
That was a lucky break indeed for Salman Butt
and Pakistan who were battling it out to stay in
the game on the 4th day. Pakistan at that stage
was at 239/3 in the 70th over with a lead of 95
runs.
