Hoggard shines
with the ball at the Adelaide Oval |
November 17, 2006
England had a bad start to their second warm-up
game before the opening Ashes Test with bowling
spearhead Steve Harmison ruled out of the
three-day match due to a side strain. But
Matthew Hoggard changed the fortunes for the
tourists as he rose to the occasion with a
three-wicket haul to have South Australia in a
miserable position at 25 for 4. Gritty knocks
from Cameron Borgas (73) and Skipper Darren
Lehman (99) rescued the homeside from being
bundled out.
Darren Lehman made a sportive declaration at 247
for 7 to leave England few overs to bat before
the close of play. Matthew Hoggard ended up with
3 for 40 in 13 overs. The other wicket takers
were James Anderson, Andrew Flintoff and Monty
Panesar who all took a wicket apiece. Shaun
Tait, the fast bowler who was included for the
Brisbane Test came up with the wicket of Andrew
Strauss who was out for a second ball-duck.
Matthew Hoggard had a role to perform once
again, this time it was with the bat as the
nightwatchman which he did well to stay not out
with Alastair Cook. England at stumps on the
first day were 24 for 1.
