Sehwag named
Delhi Captain for 2004/05 |
October 20th, Delhi:
Stage one is over and Virender Sehwag has
been named captain of Delhi. Ajay Jadeja is
vice-captain (and therefore the real captain as
Sehwag will hardly be around) and Vibhakar
Shastri was the only government nominee who
turned up for the DDCA Selection Committee
meeting on Wednesday.
By all accounts, the government's foray into
Ranji selection passed off fairly peacefully,
with neither Shastri nor anyone else really
objecting to Jadeja's appointment, which was
expected to be the only stormy point in the
meeting. The case for Jadeja was strengthened by
the fact that Mithun Manhas, vice-captain to
Sehwag last year, was not keen on taking charge
this time and refused the offer twice. According
to sources, the soft-spoken and diplomatic
Manhas was reportedly tired of the way things
were handled last year and wanted to concentrate
on his batting.
Shastri's presence meant the scaling down of
62 probables to 27 was done by a committee of
nine wise men. The six Delhi selectors headed by
chairman Yashpal Sharma, convener Sunil Dev,
coach Madan Lal and Shastri.
