The Delhi Debate & the daunting Debacle

A Special Feature by Karthik Narayan

The DDCA actually stands for Delhi District Cricket Association, but they may very well name it the Darkroom of Decisive Chaos Association. The reason is simple – Chaos rules the game of cricket in that part of the world over the decisions to host an International game between two of the giants of Asia – all on a ground that has never really been constructed fully!

As daylight dawns on the faces of millions of cricket lovers in the world, come this April 17, we shall find some real action off the cricket field for absolutely the most wrong of reasons. Purely for cricket lovers in this world, the strange happenings off the cricket field and on it (Delhi Ferohshah Kotla ground) are simply daunting and speak ill of the famed game on its string of globalization.

It is really amazing to actually realize the individuals behind the decision are in the top ranks of their respective countries – Mr. Arun Jaitley (DDCA) and Shahryar Khan (PCB) know very well beyond what they seem to be doing. Both are capable administrators able to lead and move the game into the right zone, but this – this is simply ridiculous to hear and speak! Shahryar Khan might have just pushed his luck and has withdrawn his statements about the ground and the conditions.

The ultimate debacle of this venture is that the Ferohshah Kotla ground is still under construction and it is highly unlikely and unhealthy to host even a local street match – so much for an International match! In such poor conditions of a stadium under construction and a pitch that is a mere collection of sand and clay from last year’s children’s competitions from around the city, Delhi plans to host the most important match of the year by all means – an India versus Pakistan ODI. Who knows, if that very match becomes the decider of this ODI series, well, we got some real despair on our minds and hearts to see the teams battling it out in the worst possible stadium.

The debate on the Delhi ODI has seen more Yo-Yo turns than the matches that we have seen between India and Pakistan! Every minute the authorities change their mind like chameleons in the woods. The reports from the media and the grounds-men really point out that the pitch and the outfield is not yet really prepared at all – the pitch is a dead one and with no bounce at all whereas the outfield is half done. There have already been enough complaints of the pitch against the DDCA.

At a time when cricket between India and Pakistan is a complete sellout, when some people want to cash in on the opportunity to see their pockets full, it is simply shocking, It is high time to separate cricket from the dirt surrounding it, instead of associating the dirt with the cricket saying it’s a mere part of the game! Its very well time to wash DDCA off our soil and it is time the BCCI and the ICC step in when fixtures are made so as to see the real picture and wash their eyes off the greenback that speaks more than anything else in this world. Until then, such articles, raving reviews and morbid debates shall continue to see off these elements from our Purist Game.

As of now, the best remedy is to shift the ODI from Delhi to some other city nearby so that the game will go on without hindrances of any kind. After all the game is greater any other individual whomsoever he may be! And that’s all we ask of the authorities – ideal match conditions in a super bowl for the streaming audience!
