Sachin, just enjoy it man!

A Feature by Syed Ahsan Ali on May 20, 2007

Sachin may negate that he has nothing to prove after 17 years of international cricket but is it true that he has nothing to prove? I want to believe him but can’t stop myself from thinking otherwise. It was not only Sachin who has few points to prove after the World Cup debacle but probably the whole Indian cricket team has to come out and face it courageously. But why is he eschewing all these questions pointing at him? There is nothing wrong in having a pile of queries at your door all the time. There is nothing wrong in people looking at you for resurrection. It is an honour, it is the responsibility which your nation is thrusting on you. Enjoy it man. Not too many get this fortunate chance in their lifetime which you are getting Master Blaster of carrying burden of more than one billion people.

A son looks at his father, a student looks up to the teacher, a patient looks up to the doctor, a sinner looks up to the God and in your case an entire nation looks at its hero. You are their hero. You are one of the eleven hopes that India put up on the shelf each and every time cricket is being played. It is just a matter of how you are taking it. A task has two folds, a responsibility and an opportunity. Responsibility tells to do it whether you want it or not. Opportunity tells you to do it and pave for your better future. There is only one difference, responsibility pushes you forward and opportunity moves you forward. You are usually pushed forward by forces, you can’t be pushed forward yourself. You need a force, warranted or unwarranted. Whereas moving is your free will, you do it out of your own choice. I hope I make myself clear.

Sachin TendulkarLet’s come to the other part of his statement. Proving one’s ability. Sachin, don’t you think that when your dearth of run-making is seventeen months long without a century then you have few blokes to say shut up to them? I think you have to and your century did it. Say shut up to all those who were having a ball after your lean trot. But Sachin it is not the end of the road. It is just another turn. There is still a long way to go. We prove ourselves on each single day of our lives. It is not only you. Any other human being has to do it on every breath. Am I wrong readers? I hope I am not. We have to prove ourselves to our families, to our bosses, to our colleagues and somewhere on hindsight to our own selves. You can’t ride on your achievements all life long. Having 10668 Test runs and 14847 One day runs can’t prevent bowlers from getting you out. Each and everyday you have to go out and prove them that you are there on your ability not on your records. Your being Sachin can’t halt them from coming at you. And when we ask you to prove yourself then we are not asking about your ability, your ability is unquestionable, it is your will, your will to survive was under scrutiny not your ability.

So it is the rule of law of this life. Life asks for proofs and we have to give it. Whether we like it or not. When we have to do something again, again and again then why don’t do it enjoyably. So great man enjoy it!
