Is this the solution?

A Feature by Syed Ahsan Ali on May 15, 2007

It was pleasant to see a young Indian team on the ground. Selectors look forward to build an energetic, fresh unit that can fight and win for India consistently. The areas that can be improved by selecting this young team are fielding, running between the wicket and less inhibited cricket which comes with the experience when you know the both sides of coin if you lose the match. But close your eyes, exhale breath and riposte, is this the solution?

If you ask me then this is not a solution. Look at the teams which got nothing out of this World Cup. There are basically three teams which performed pathetically in this last edition of Cricket World Cup 2007, West Indies, India and Pakistan. These are the teams which do not have happy relations with their boards. These are the teams which are basically run by managers than experienced cricketers. Results are all before us for all kind of analysis. All these three teams are now showing faith in young generation for their resurrection. India named and played a young unit, Pakistan got in an extremely young skipper, West Indies looked at a young but experienced cricketer to lead their team.

Youngsters will perform to get their teams going definitely. Teams will start hitting the target more often than not. People say and write that boards’ right decision at the right time save cricket from devastation. But after that what has happened? These youngsters will become stars. They will get complacent for their places and reputation. They will start breaking rules and then created havoc. What will you do then to put things right? Appointment of another young team, or giving responsibility to another young captain. No certainly not.

We have to change the style this game should be run. Discipline should come in, selection has to be done meritoriously, stars tag has to be left outside cricket stadium, and boards should be strong to keep their stern hands going. These are the solutions that can keep our teams on their toes otherwise the way Dhoni and Karthik are performing; they will start evolving bigger egos than their predecessors’, result of which we already know. We have to deal players in such a fashion that they push themselves to the limits which are generally expected from international players. And for that, we have to bring a change in our overall thinking process.

Players become superstars when boards start thinking them inevitable for the success and when media make them stars with one performance thanks to all articles, interviews, images and projection. Doing this is alright. There is nothing wrong with that but don’t make them monsters. Do it with the air of anticipation not with unshakable belief. Treat them as if they are ‘triers’ not superhuman who will go out and minced every living soul come near them. Try to highlight their mistakes even when they win it so they can improve rather than accolade them as if they can’t do any wrong. We are far more solutions but let’s start that journey today.
