Adam
Gilchrist played a memorable innings in what was
his last match on his home ground. His 16th ODI
hundred at the WACA paved way for a
comprehensive victory over Sri Lanka in the 6th
match of the CB Series.
Despite Gilchrist scoring a ton, Australia
could manage just a moderate total of 236 on the
board. Even that total was too good for the Sri
Lankan batsmen who failed to complement their
bowlers. Sri Lanka crashed to 173 to end up
conceding a bonus point. Early on, a fruitful
partnership of 105 between Gilchrist and Michael
Clark was spoilt by a batting collapse in the
last phase of the innings for Australia.
Gilchrist scored 118 in 132 balls with 9 fours
and 3 sixes to stay right till the 44th over.
Michael Clarke was the second highest scorer
with 43 from 69 with 4 fours. Ponting and Hussey
chipped in with 25 each but it was the collapse
of 5 for 30 in 38 balls in the slog overs that
brought Sri Lanka back in the game strongly.
Lasith Malinga was the star with the ball for
Sri Lanka as he bowled fast, used the extra
bounce coupled with his well disguised slower
ones. He ended up with a fabulous 4 for 47. The
Sri Lankan innings after losing its openers -
Jayasuriya and Dilshan early was brought back
into a nice shape through a partnership between
Sangakkara and Jayawardene. But both these
batsmen were up against some terrific bowling,
in particular from left armer Mitchell Johnson,
who made sure that Jayawardene didn't last long.
Jaywardene made 21 to take SL to 71 for 3 in the
11th over. Sri Lanka were very soon 76 for 4
when Andrew Symonds held to an incredible one
handed diving catch to his left at covers which
saw the back of Chamara Silva.
The initial thought of Symonds taking the
catch was simply awesome but slow motion replays
confirmed that it was a moment of shame for
cricket. One half of the ball was clearly
touching the ground! The Umpire in question,
Daryl Harper made a blunder of giving that out
straightaway without bothering to ask the third
umpire! Sri Lanka after that couldn't get back
in the game even though there was a 53 between
Sangakkara and Kapugedera (26 from 60) which was
too slow to make any impact. Sangakkara was the
last man to be dismissed when he was cleaned up
by Lee in the 46th over which had Sri Lanka
bowled out for 173. Sangakkara made 80 from 114
with 4 fours. Bracken and Johnson shared three
wickets each while all the other bowlers got
wickets as well. The Man of the Match was Adam
Gilchrist.
