Damien Martyn
says good bye to Cricket! |
December 08, 2006
Australia's
stylish middle order batsman, Damien Martyn has
surprisingly announced his retirement from all
forms of the game today. The announcement from
Martyn has come on the same day on which the
squad for the third Ashes test at Perth was
going to be picked. There were speculation that
Martyn would have lost his place after he had
scores of 29, 11 and 5 in the three innings of
the first two Tests. With plenty of young
players knocking the doors of the Australian
team with their consistently supreme
performances, Martyn has decided to move aside.
This ends the career of an often unsung but a
very elegant batsman from Western Australia.
Marto as he is fondly called has ended his
career with 67 Tests and 208 ODIs besides
playing 204 first class games. He had scored
4406 test runs with 13 100s and 23 50s with a
healthy average of 46.37. In the 208 ODIs he had
played, he has scored 5346 runs at 40.80 average
with 5 100s and 37 50s. The 35-year-old Damien
Martyn has played county cricket for
Leicestershire and Yorkshire in the past. His
Test Match Debut was 14 years back against the
West Indies at the Gabba while his ODI Debut
came in the Benson & Hedges World Series match
at Sydney in which he was out for a duck. His
last ODI was the ICC Champions Trophy Final
against WI. Australia do have plenty of good
players to grab Damien Martyn's spot in the team
but will they be able to match the style and
class of Marto will have to be seen.
