Sangakkara hits a
double; Banglas heading towards a third day
defeat |
July 04, 2007 (Link to
Scorecard)
Kumar
Sangakkara struck his fifth double century to
give Sri Lanka a massive first innings lead of
389. The Tigers in their last chance in this
test match are once again in a mess at 69 for 4
and are certainly heading towards a third day
innings defeat. That is expected because
Bangladesh haven't even managed to bat out a
full day's play or 90 overs in the recent past.
Sri Lanka had helped
itself to 451 for 6 before declaring their
innings when Kumar Sangakkara had exactly got
200. Sangakkara started the day on 51 and had
ended up with 200 from 325 balls with 20 fours
and two sixes. Earlier in the day, left handed
opener Malinda Warnapura fell 18 runs short of a
maiden hundred. Skipper Mahela Jayawardene got
out to 49 with Shahadat Hossain striking twice
in the morning. Chamara Silva with 33 and
Dilshan with a duck had also missed out in
getting a big score against a pathetic bowling
attack. Sri Lanka could score 294 runs today
having batted close to 80 overs.
Bangladesh got off to a
splendid start, knocking off almost a fifty
inside seven overs. But Vaas and Dilhara
Fernando provided the breaks to have them four
down. Both pacers took a couple of wickets each
after Lasith Malinga was taken for 22 in two
overs with the new ball. Javed Omar had got 28
from 23 with 6 fours while Shahriar Nafees got
20 which is not the scores that Bangladesh would
be looking for in the longer version of the
game. At stumps, the Captain Mohammad Ashraful
and the former Captain Habibul Bashar are the
two unbeaten batsmen.
