Sanath creates
new record in SL's win over Tigers |
July 23, 2007 (Link to
Scorecard)
Sanath
Jayasuriya created a new world record in Sri
Lanka's easy triumph over Bangladesh in the
Second One Day International. The Matara Blaster
became the first ever player to complete the
rarest of rare double of scoring 10000 runs and
300 wickets in ODIs. This was achieved when
Sanath got the last Bangladeshi wicket to fall.
Sri Lanka had to chase a paltry target of 138
which they did losing five wickets.
Bangladeshis were in
great trouble after being invited to bat first
under damp pitch conditions. The Sri Lankan new
ball bowlers exploited the helpful conditions to
the fullest and as usual a familiar batting
collapse was witnessed from the Bangladeshis.
Within an hour the match transformed into a no
contest for the homeside as Bangladesh got to an
ugly 26 for 4. Out of those four wickets, Lasith
Malinga accounted for three. Skipper Ashraful
(29 from 59 balls) tried a bit to take
Bangladesh to some sort of respectability. But
he was one of four victims that Jayasuriya had
pocketed in 9.5 overs of bowling. The wicket of
Syed Rasel was the magical 300 for Sanath. Aftab
Ahmed was the top scorer for Bangladesh with an
85-ball 47. The Bangladeshi innings lasted just
46.5 overs in which they had crawled to 137.
Sri Lanka got off to a
good start from Sanath Jayasuriya and Upul
Tharanga. But they did have their hiccups as the
Bangladeshi bowlers managed to get a few
breakthroughs to delay the inevitable defeat.
None of the Sri Lankan batsmen got to even a
half century with the likes of Tharanga (28),
Jayasuriya (24) and Chamara Silva (36) not able
to convert their starts. Sri Lanka got to the
target in 31.1 overs with Dilshan staying
unbeaten on 20. Syed Rasel bowled well for
Bangladesh with 2 for 39 in his 10 overs.
