Mahi is India's New
Skipper for ODIs! |
September 18, 2007
Mahendra
Singh Dhoni has been named as India's Skipper
for the One Day Series against Australia and
Pakistan. Dhoni's appointment came after a
sudden resignation from Rahul Dravid four days
back. The Selectors had approached Sachin
Tendulkar for the job which was refused by him
according to media reports. Dilip Vengsarkar and
his men had to entrust the responsibility on the
26-year-old Mahendra Singh Dhoni who is
currently leading India in the inaugural
Twenty20 World Championship. Yuvraj Singh has
been named as Dhoni's Deputy. The decision to
name a Skipper for Test Matches however has been
held back. The BCCI has also got to appoint a
new Coach in the coming days.
The Selectors had also
sat together to name a 15-man squad for the
first three One Dayers against the Aussies.
Irfan Pathan and Harbhajan Singh make their
comeback following their good show in the
Twenty20 Match against Pakistan and New Zealand
while Virender Sehwag has been made to wait. The
axe has fallen on young and untested Rohit
Sharma along with medium pacers Ajit Agarkar and
Munaf Patel. Sreesanth who was dropped for the
One Day Series against England has regained his
place. India's squad has three spinners in
Harbhajan Singh, Ramesh Powar and Piyush Chawla.
The Selectors have revealed that there would be
a rotation policy in picking players for the 12
ODIs against Australia and Pakistan. India plays
7 ODIs and a Twenty20 against Australia with the
first ODI to be played at Rahul Dravid's home
ground in Bangalore on the 29th.
