Kumble, Zaheer
recalled for ODIs; Jaffer also included |
October 30, 2006
Team
India might have been knocked out of the
Champions Trophy without qualifying for the
Semi-Finals but the Selectors have kept faith in
the nucleus of the side as they picked the ODI
squad for next month’s South Africa tour. A
16-man squad was picked along with two stand bys
to give cover for the injured Yuvraj Singh and
Ajit Agarkar.
Anil Kumble and Zaheer Khan have forced their
way back in the bowling department.
Ramesh Powar who
did little wrong was excluded to make way for
the legendary Kumble. Left arm pacer
R.P.Singh
has been dropped following his lackluster
performances. A surprise inclusion in the squad
was that of India’s Test Opener Wasim Jaffer who
is yet to play a One Day International for
India. The Selectors have thought that Wasim
Jaffer will be a useful resource in the batting
as the wickets are expected to be bouncy and
seamer friendly in South Africa. Youngster
Suresh Raina who was close at getting axed has
been retained in the squad. Two stand bys have
been named for Yuvraj Singh and Ajit Agarkar who
would go to South Africa depending on their
fitness. Tamil Nadu’s explosive wicket-keeper
batsman, Dinesh Karthik is a stand by for Yuvraj
while Punjab fast bowler, Vikram Singh is the
stand by for Ajit Agarkar.
India play 5 ODIs along with its maiden Twenty20
International in the first leg of the tour.
Three test matches are also to be played as part
of the tour. The first ODI is on the 19th of
November at Johannesburg.
