Former Test player Ashok Mankad passes away

Indian Cricket had a bad morning on August 1st when it was known that former Test Cricketer Ashok Mankad had expired in Mumbai. Ashok Mankad was also the son of India's Cricketing legend - Vinoo Mankad. In Sri Lanka, the Indian team members are wearing black arm bands to pay their respect to the late Ashok Mankad, who passed away at just 61!

 

It was a peaceful death for Ashok Mankad in his sleep. The news came as a shock to the cricketing fraternity as Ashok Mankad didn't have any major health worries. He played 22 Tests for India spread over 9 years between 1969 and 1979 besides also playing a solitary One Day International. Ashok was a legend in Mumbai Cricket and was considered as one of the best ever captains that the State has had. He played 218 first class and had scored 31 hundreds and 70 half centuries at 50.90 average. His Test Career saw moderate success with just under 1000 runs coming in 42 innings at 25.41 average. The Junior Mankad had notched up six test fifties. After his retirement, he donned the role as a Cricketing administrator and also as a Coach where he had helped in developing plenty of cricketers.

 

Ashok Mankad's family has a huge sporting background. While his father is the great Vinoo Mankad, his wife - Nirupama Mankad is a former Asian Tennis Champion. Ashok Mankad's son - Harsh Mankad has been a member of the Indian Davis Cup team.
