Full Scorecard
India defeated Australia by a narrow margin of
13 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
The Indians had a shaky start to their 2nd
Innings, as Gambhir got out in the first over of
the day. Sehwag too didn't last long as he was
caught plumb in front to McGrath. Laxman and
Sachin finally got some runs to their names as
both of them took the Aussie bowlers to the
cleaners. They played some immaculate shots and
looked in control to post a huge total. In one
particular over of Hauritz, Sachin went on to
score 15 runs which included a huge six over
long on. But soon after reaching his 50, he got
out to an over ambitious shot as he tried to
slog Hauritz but ended up scooping it to Clarke
who completed a fine running catch at square
leg. Laxman got out for a well made 69 as he was
caught wonderfully by Hauritz of his own
bowling. The remaining Indian batsmen made a
procession back to the pavillion as none were
able to withstand the left arm orthodox spin
bowling of Michael Clarke. Clarke ended up with
astounding figures of 6 wickets for just 9 runs
as the Indians were bowled out for 205.
The Aussies required just 107 runs to make it a
3-0 series victory, but it was going to be very
tough on that spinner friendly track. The
Indians got an early break through in the form
of Langer as he edged Zaheer into the hands of
Dinesh Karthik for the first catch of his Test
career. Hayden and Ponting attacked the Indian
bowlers by smashing them for some glorious
boundaries and looked dangerous to finish the
match quickly. The introduction of Murali Kartik
saw Ponting edge him to Laxman of his very first
ball. Three balls later Martyn was out plumb in
front to a beautiful arm ball from Kartik.
Katich did not last long as he went for an
expansive drive against Harbhajan but ended up
edging it to Dravid at slip. Hayden was finally
out for 24 as he was bowled around his legs by
Harbhajan. Clarke and Gilchrist gifted away
their wickets leaving the Aussies in real
trouble at 58/7. The tail-enders tried hard to
take Australia beyond the required target, but
some beautiful bowling by Kumble and Harbhajan
in the end made sure that the Aussies were
bundled out for 93. India thus salvaged some
pride for themsleves going down 2-1 to the
Aussies. Murali Kartik was awarded the Man of
the Match for his outstanding bowling. Damien
Martyn was awarded the Man of the series for
scoring 444 runs in 4 Matches.
Day 2 - November 4th 2004
India 104 (Dravid 31*, Gillespie
4/29 Hauritz 3/16) & 5/0 trail Australia
203 (Martyn 55, Kumble 5/90 Kartik 4/44)
It was wickets galore on Day 2 of the 4th Test
between India and Australia at Mumbai as 18
wickets fell in the day.
Resuming at 22/2, India lost Sachin early as
Gillespie induced a thin edge into the gloves of
Gilchrist. The other top order Indian batsmen
followed a procession back to the pavilion as
Laxman and Kaif were dismissed cheaply. The
debutant Dinesh Karthik spent some time with
Dravid before he had his middle stump uprooted
to a well bowled yorker by Kasprowicz. Kumble
and Harbhajan gave Dravid some support by
scoring quick runs, thus helping India to go
past the 100 run mark. Nathan Hauritz who was
also making his debut went on to take his first
Test
wicket in his very first over in the form of
Kumble. He ended up with figures of 3/16. The
Indians were finally dismissed for a paltry 104
with Dravid still unbeaten on 31.
The Australians got of to a bad start as they
lost Langer very early who edged Zaheer into the
hands of Dravid. Rahul Dravid thus went past
Sunil Gavaskar for the highest number of catches
by an Indian in Tests. Ricky Ponting who was
making a comeback couldn't last long as he got
out leg before wicket to a flipper from Kumble.
Hayden hit three huge sixes before he got out to
Murali Kartik with Australia at 81/3. The post
tea session saw Katich getting out to Kumble
with Kaif taking the catch at short leg but
replays did suggest that the ball came off the
pad without touching the bat. Dinesh Karthik
celebrated his 1st dismissal in Tests in the
form of Michael Clarke when he had him stumped
of the bowling of Kumble. Gilchrist was looking
dangerous before he got out to Kartik for 26 of
just 18 balls. The Aussie tail did not last long
as they tumbled for 203, which meant a lead of
99 runs over the Indians.
The Indians had to see through 3 overs of the
Australian bowling to end Day 2 and they did it
successfully finishing the day at 5/0. Sehwag
was unbeaten on 4 and Gambhir was on 1 at Stumps
as India still require 94 runs to cover the
deficit.
Day 1 - November 3rd 2004
India 22/2 (McGrath 1/9 Gillespie
1/13)
Day 1 of the Final Test at Mumbai was a day
dominated by continuous showers, followed by the
Australian bowlers.
Earlier in the day, Rahul Dravid won the toss
and elected to bat first. India had 2 debutants
in the form of Gautam Gambhir and Dinesh Karthik
who replaced Akash Chopra and Parthiv Patel
after their continuous streak of dismal
performances. Australia also had a debutant in
the form of young off-spinner Nathan Hauritz.
Heavy overnight showers and continuous drizzles
throughout the day made sure that there was a
delayed start to the proceedings. The players
finally got on to the field after more than 4
hours of delay as play began at 2.00 PM IST. The
Indians who aren't aliens to a bad starts
nowadays, got one yet again with Sehwag and
Gambhir getting out early to McGrath and
Gillespie respectively in the first 4 overs.
Rain again interrupted with just 4 overs bowled
leaving India at a staggering 12/2. The skies
cleared again after 2 hours as the players
marched again into the centre. After adding just
10 runs, play was called off again as Sachin and
Dravid complained of bad light. No play was
possible after that as the umpires called it off
for the day. Dravid was unbeaten on 9 while
Sachin was on 2 at Stumps on Day 1.
