Australia 474 & 228 defeat India 246 & 239
(Dravid 60 Pathan 55 H Singh 42, Gillespie
3/33) by 217 runs
Full Scorecard
Australia cruised to a 217 run victory and
thereby took a 1-0 lead in this 4 Test Match
Series at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.
Starting the day at 105/6, it was a guaranteed
victory on the cards for the Aussies, but the
question was How long would they require to pack
off the Indian batting? The Aussies got early
breakthrough in the form of Rahul Dravid when he
was trapped in front to Kasprowicz after adding
13 runs to his overnight score of 47. Kumble was
the next to go as he had his stumps cleaned,
thanks to an inside edge of the bowling of
Kasprowicz. Harbhajan came in at the score of
125/8 and started off with a boundary. Pathan
who was quite on the other end till Dravid got
out, freed his arms to play some exquisite
strokes. Pathan with the help of 8 boundaries
and 2 sixes brought up his first 50 in Tests and
was applauded by the thousands of fans at the
Chinnaswamy Stadium. But, soon after lunch India
lost Pathan for a very well made 55 as he edged
Gillespie into the hands of Adam Gilchrist.
Zaheer came in and hit some lusty blows, thus
the tail-enders clearly showing that batting
wasn't as difficult as the top order had
picturised. The Indian batting finally folded up
for 239 as Harbhajan tried to hoike Gillespie
over the square leg boundary, but to his dismay
found McGrath taking a comfortable catch.
It was a convincing victory for the Aussies,
inspite of the late respite shown by the Indian
tail-enders. Michael Clarke was awarded the Man
of the Match for his century in the 1st Innings.
The Series shifts from Bangalore to Chennai, as
the 2nd Test starts on the 14th of October. Keep

Day 4 - October 9th, 2004
Australia 474 & 228 (Martyn 45, H Singh
6/78) lead India 246 & 105/6 (Dravid 47*,
McGrath 2/9) by 351 runs
Australia are one step close to victory in the
1st Test here at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in
Bangalore. They just require 4 wickets on the
5th Day to register a 1-0 lead in this 4 Match
series.
Resuming at 127/4, Australia looked confident
enough to post a daunting target of 450+ for the
Indians. Clarke was the first batsman to get out
for 17 to Harbhajan with Chopra taking the
catch. Martyn was the next to go for a well made
45 with the Aussies at 167/6. Gilchrist made 26
confident runs before he was out to Kumble with
Chopra taking the catch. Warne added 31 valuable
runs to the Aussie scorecard before he was
caught wonderfully by Yuvraj at short leg of the
bowling of Harbhajan. Harbhajan also went on to
take the next 2 wickets and dismissed Australia
for 228. Harbhajan finished with match figures
of 11/224, which meant that all his three
10-wicket hauls came against Australia.
Indians started off poorly, thanks to some poor
umpiring from Billy Bowden as Sehwag was
adjudged LBW to McGrath in spite of a huge
inside edge onto the pads. Akash Chopra
continued with his poor form as he got out LBW
to Gillespie. The Indian Captain Sourav Ganguly
was the next to go as he pushed the ball sweetly
to Kasprowicz and set off to run, misjudging his
own timing and was run out by a long distance.
Warne's introduction into the attack saw the
dismissal of Laxman as he try to play a flipper
with the bat tucked under his pads. Yuvraj was
the next to come in and he along with Dravid put
up a healthy partnership of 62 runs. McGrath's
first over of the 2nd spell saw the demise of
Yuvraj, as he tried to fiddle at an away going
delivery and eventually edged it to Gilchrist
who completed a fine catch. Parthiv was out in
the very next over to Warne as the ball spun
viciously to hit Parthiv's pads in front of the
stumps. Pathan then joined Dravid and gave him
good support until the end of the day, as he
remained unbeaten on 7. Rahul Dravid who
remained unbeaten on 47 stands in between
Australia and victory on the final day.
Day 3 - October 8th, 2004
Australia 474 & 127/4 (Katich 39
Hayden 30 Martyn 29*, Kumble 1/26) lead
India 246 (Patel 46 Ganguly 45, McGrath
4/55) by 355 runs
Australia lead India by a mammoth 355 runs at
the end of Day 3 of the 1st Test at Bangalore.
Earlier in the day, India resumed at the
overnight score of 150/6 with Pathan and Parthiv
giving a strong fight-back to the Aussies.
Pathan was finally dismissed for 31 by Shane
Warne...rather Billy Bowden as he was given out
to a ball which did not touch his bat and went
straight into the keepers gloves. Parthiv was
the next one to go, when he was clean bowled by
Gillespie for a well made 46. The tail wagged
well for India with everybody contributing
including the likes of Kumble who scored 26 and
gave good support to Parthiv. The Indian Innings
finally ended at 246 which meant that Aussies
took a huge first innings lead of 228.
Aussies had the option of following-on, but they
decided to bat again keeping in mind the
deteriorating pitch and fresh memories of the
Kolkata Test in 2001, where they lost after
enforcing the follow on. The Aussies started off
badly as Langer was dismissed in the very first
over by Irfan Pathan. Katich then joined Hayden
and they made 65 quick runs which included 8
hits to the fence. Hayden was the next to go as
Harbhajan ran him out with a direct hit from
backward point. Katich soon followed Hayden as
he edged Kumble into the safe hands of Rahul
Dravid who celebrated his 100th catch, also at
his homeground. Indians did not have to wait
long to see the back of Darren Lehmann, who got
out to Harbhajan with Chopra taking a sharp
catch at silly point. Martyn remained unbeaten
on 29 at stumps along with the 1st Innings
centurion Michael Clarke who was unbeaten on 11.
Day 2 - October 7th, 2004
India 150/6 (Ganguly 45 Sehwag 39,
McGrath 3/37) trail Australia 474
(Clarke 151 Gilchrist 104, H Singh 5/146)
by 324 runs
Day 2 of the 1st Test at Bangalore completely
belonged to Australia.
Resuming at 316/5, Gilchrist and Clarke
continued dismantling the Indian bowlers to all
corners of the park. Clarke soon reached his
century and thus became the 17th Australian to
score a century on debut. Gilchrist soon
followed him up and reached his century of just
103 balls which included three mighty sixes.
Harbhajan finally broke the 167 run stand when
he caught Gilchrist splendidly of his own bowling for a
score of 104. The tail didn't last long as the
last five wickets fell for just 51 runs. Clarke
was eventually dismissed by Zaheer Khan for a
well made 151 as he became just the 6th
Australian to get a 150 on debut. Harbhajan
Singh was the most successful bowler for India
as he ended up with figures of 5/146.
The Indian start couldn't have been any worse as
they lost Chopra leg before wicket to McGrath in
the very first over of the Indian Innings. The Indian
Wall Rahul Dravid soon followed him without
disturbing the scorers as he was bowled by
McGrath for a duck. Then, the Indian skipper
Sourav Ganguly joined Sehwag and both of them
put on a partnership of 83 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Kasprowicz's introduction into the
middle saw the end of Sehwag and Ganguly
immediately for scores of 39 and 45
respectively, with India tottering at 98/4.
McGrath went on to take his 3rd wicket in the
form of Yuvraj as he went after a delivery
outside off-stump and eventually edged it to the
safe hands of Gilchrist. Laxman looked confident
with his strokes but with 5 overs to go in the
day, he got out - bowled by Shane Warne, as the
ball spun viciously to bowl Laxman from all ends. India
ended the 2nd day at 150/6 with 125 runs
required to avoid the follow-on. McGrath and Kasprowicz were impressive with figures of 3/37
and 2/23 respectively. Two youngsters Parthiv
Patel and Irfan Pathan were holding fort for
India at stumps with India still trailing by 324
runs.
Day 1 - October 6th, 2004
Australia 316/5 (Katich 81 Clarke 76*
Langer 52, Kumble 3/86)
Australia ended their score at 316/5 on Day 1 of
the 1st Test Match at Banglalore. Katich top
scored with 81 along with the debutant Michael
Clarke who remained unbeaten at the end of the
day on 76. Adam Gilchrist, the captain of the
Australian team was unbeaten on 35 along with
Michael Clarke.
Earlier in the day, Gilchrist won the toss and
elected to bat first. The first wicket of Hayden
and Langer put on 50 runs before Hayden was out
to Harbhajan. Langer went on to score 52 runs
before he was out to a beautiful in-swinging
yorker from Pathan which after hitting Langer's
pad deflected onto the stumps. Then Australia
immediately lost Martyn, who was followed by
their vice-captain Darren Lehmann as he got out
to an arrogant short to Kumble, gifting the ball
to Dravid at slip. Then came in the
debutant-Michael Clarke, who looked confident
from ball no.1. He along with Katich went on to
add 107 runs for the 5th wicket, when Kumble
bowled Katich to get his 400th Test wicket.
Kumble, thus became only the 2nd Indian after
Kapil Dev and the 9th Bowler in the World to
achieve this feat. Gilchrist then joined Clarke
and both of them blasted shorts all around the
park and played out the rest of the day. For the
Indians, Kumble was the pick of the bowlers with
figures of 3/86.
