After reviewing the sensational
One Day International at the MCG in 1984,
Cricketfundas.com takes its readers a further
five years ahead. This time the venue being
Trent Bridge, Nottinghamshire and Australia were
clashing with England for the Texaco Trophy.
England had won the 1st ODI at Manchester in a
whooping manner by 95 runs. England batting
looked solid with the opening pair of Graham
Gooch and skipper David Gower and the batsmen to
follow were Gatting, Lamb, Robin Smith and Ian
Botham. But Australia were not far behind their
counterparts with a batting order of Geoff
Marsh, David Boon, Dean Jones, Border, Steve
Waugh and Tom Moody. England looked in ominous
form with their performance in the 1st one dayer,
Australia on the other hand had to fire in this
match to keep their hopes alive for a Texaco
Trophy win.

England had won the 1st ODI at Manchester in a

Australia began their run chase
in a cautious but steady fashion as their
openers Boon and Geoff Marsh put on a decent
stand of 59. Ian Botham pulled the brakes for
the Australian chase cleaning up the stumps of
Boon, and John Emburey followed that up by
trapping Marsh infront of the stumps. England
were back in the game with the scorecard reading
81/2. Dean Jones, skipper Allan Border and Tom
Moody all had starts to their respective innings
but England managed to pick those three wickets
and it was even-stevens with Australia at 174/5.
It became even more tense for the Kangaroos,
after the young Steve Waugh was tragically run
out for 43, but there was Ian Healy who was
taking charge of the proceedings. Australia were
running out of overs and they shockingly ended
at the same score as England’s 226 much to the
delight of the 11,000 odd English supporters.
Steve Waugh was the topscorer with 43 and John
Emburey was the most successful bowler with 2/47
in 11 overs. Allan Lamb was awarded the Man of
the Match for his delightful hundred.
This One Day International played on the 27th
May, 1989 thus became only the second tied ODI.
This match was after a gap of 321 ODIs since the
1st tied ODI was played at the MCG in 1984, thus
making TIED MATCHES a rare gem in the history of
this wonderful game of Cricket.
Cricketfundas.com infact becomes only the first
website to have a review about this tied one day
international!!!
